Asset-Based Thinking - “Listen Up!”

In our latest book, “Change The way You See Yourself”, we discuss the very powerful yet subtle Asset-Based Thinking principle of “Listening Softer”. Listening softer means that you are showering your attention on someone in a way that illuminates the deeper significance of what is being said. It really works…give it a try.

While I was listening to NPR, I learned that today, Friday November 28, has been declared a National Day of Listening.

“This holiday season, ask the people around you about their lives — it could be your grandmother, a teacher, or someone from the neighborhood. By listening to their stories, you will be telling them that they matter and they won’t ever be forgotten. It may be the most meaningful time you spend this year.”

What a great idea.  And, it again reminded how important the simple act of listening can be to making the most of our relationships with others. (Something my wife has reminded me of on more than one occasion.) The National Day of Listening initiative is part of a larger program that is another wonderful example of ABT at its best. StoryCorps

StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit project whose mission is to honor and celebrate one another’s lives through listening. It’s the largest oral history project ever conducted. Since 2003, tens of thousands of everyday people have interviewed family and friends through StoryCorps.

“By listening closely to one another, we can help illuminate the true character of this nation reminding us all just how precious each day can be and how truly great it is to be alive.”

-Dave Isay, Founder, StoryCorps

More about StoryCorps in future blogs. So, for today, try listening softer and make it your “Personal Day of Listening”.

Look forward to listening to your reactions.

Hank
